How our grey water collection process works

The wastewater from your home or business is collected into main line pipes and is fed by gravity to 5 lift stations in the District. Only wastewater from showers, sinks, toilets, washing machines, and dishwashers is allowed in the system. Groundwater is not allowed to be put into the system. Here is a description of hour our collection process works:

  • The wastewater flows through the underground pipes to lift stations. The pumps in the lift stations pump the wastewater to another manhole where the wastewater then flows to another lift station. The final lift station in the District pumps wastewater to the collection system owned by the City of Sioux Falls.
  • The wastewater is then run through a process to treat the water until it meets EPA and DENR standards. The water is then released into the Big Sioux River.
  • The Renner Sanitary District pays the City of Sioux Falls for providing collection and treatment of the wastewater from our customers.
